Best / Worst Gifts You’ve Gotten…

Tag: CuriousMouthyGirl @ 6:31 am

The best gift I ever received I can’t disclose here, but I can tell you it is still being used today and I received it four to five years ago.

There really is no worst gift for me, honestly I don’t usually have an answer when people ask me what I want for Christmas. I am a content person most of the time and have to search my mind for things I might want. Usually I ask for my favorite perfumes, one of which is expensive, by my definition and one that is pretty reasonably priced.

So I have no worst story to tell, but I’m sure you do, so now it’s your turn on the floor… What was the best/worst gift you ever got and why?

Who gave it to you and how did you react?

Tell us all the juicy details…..

When are We Going to Get Over It?

Tag: Curious, Humility, Life, Mouthy Girls, Opinion, ProgressMouthyGirl @ 2:46 pm

Dr. Manis

For much of the last forty years, ever since America “fixed” its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, “When are African Americans finally going to get over it?

Now I want to ask: “When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?

Recent reports that “Election Spurs Hundreds’ of Race Threats, Crimes” should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in “Bombingham,” Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than “talk the talk.”

Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood.

We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent. Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years, conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes. Call for their impeachment, perhaps.

But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.

But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we’re back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we’ve proven what conservatives are always saying -that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president. But instead we now hear that schoolchildren from Maine to California are talking about wanting to “assassinate Obama.”

Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, “How long?” How long before we white people realize we can’t make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us? How long until we white people can -once and for all- get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color? How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior? How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites?

How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin? How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations?

I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners? How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do?

How long before we starting “living out the true meaning” of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that “red and yellow, black and white” all are precious in God’s sight?

Until this past November 4, I didn’t believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don’t believe I’ll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem. But here’s my three-point plan:

First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built I’m going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people.

Second, I’m going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama.

Third, I’m going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can “in spirit and in truth” sing of our damnable color prejudice, “We HAVE overcome.”

I’m Gonna Try It!

Tag: Curious, LifeMouthyGirl @ 8:56 am

I’ve seen this more and more on TV and I’m very curious about how well it m ay work. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of fresh herbs and spices in the kitchen, but knowing my lack of a green thumb, never really fully embraced the idea of having them.

But now I have no excuse, because they’ve made it ridiculously easy for us to get healthier. I want this for Christmas…

Don’t you?! I think it would be awesome to yank a tomato off my plant at any time I want to and have a tomato, or have burgers with fresh tomato, that I grew!

We all know that we have to do something to get healthier, so why not do something easy? One reviewer said this about it, “Grow herbs and more, even with the ‘thumb of death’..”which I ironically possess!

I couldn’t ask for more confirmation really, this is incredibly encouraging. So yes, I’d like to have fresh chives, tomatoes, rosemary and all sorts of other seasonings and herbs we don’t use much right now.

What would you grow if you had one?

GirlFriday Inspiration

Tag: Curious, Entertainment, GirlFriday, Just FunMouthyGirl @ 9:38 am

I’ve been inspired recently to make some changes with MouthyGirl.com and I thought I’d mention them and get your input. This isn’t going to be a poll, so for all of you lurkers who like to read but not interact, I’d like you to participate today because I value your input as well.

I’m thinking of taking this blog into more of a magazine direction. Maybe posting more frequently with news, I mean real news, maybe some general interest stories, health information, etc. Tell me what you think. Also, if you could tell me what your favorite magazines are to read, when and if you read them so I can get a better idea of what you like.

I know no one reads magazines anymore so if you read them online, that counts too. ;)

I’d also like to start a column, a sort of advice column but not restricted to love advice like Dear Abby or etiquette advice like Dear Margo (though she is my favorite because she’s so spicy).

But I thought it might be kind of cool to be able to interact with you, share my opinion on your situations, if you like, and have a good time, maybe even a laugh.

So tell me your thoughts, all of you, is there anything you think you should be seeing here that you haven’t yet, any topics you’d like me to talk about?

And here is a fun little video…

Gift Giving: Spouse or Significant Other

Tag: Curious, Entertainment, Just Fun, Life, LoveMouthyGirl @ 9:17 am

The hardest part of Christmas to me is buying for the hubby. We both want so much, so it’s hard to nail down something that I can get him that one, he’ll like, two, he’ll use and three, that’s not going to cost an arm and a leg.

So I wanted to take a poll of my readers and ask you, do you guess what your spouse or significant other might want for Christmas or do you make it easy on yourself and ask outright what they want?

Do you ask your spouse what they want for Christmas or guess?

  • I have to ask, they're impossible to buy for otherwise. (100%, 1 Votes)
  • I guess, but I get it right every year...or at least they haven't complained yet. (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 1

Loading ... Loading ...

What’s your success rate? Are they typically pretty happy with what you’ve gotten them if you guessed?

Also I wanted to make it a little fun too, so now I ask another question (I know I’m full of curiosity today ;D)…

What’s the worst gift you ever bought, and did the recipient agree? What was their reaction?

One more question….what are you hoping to get this year more than anything else?

This should be fun! Happy Thursday everyone, see you back here tomorrow for GirlFriday!

Five Things Meme

Tag: Curious, Entertainment, Just Fun, MeMeMouthyGirl @ 7:16 am

I got tagged by Debo at DeboHobo.com to complete a Five Things Meme. She twisted it up a bit and completed a video meme but since I am without webcam at this particular moment, that is not going to happen here. However, her original meme was to be done in handwritten form, which I can accomodate oddly enough, so I’ll do that part that she didn’t do. Though I think the video is an ingenius idea. ;) Props to Debo!

I have a hard time sometimes with meme’s, especially when they’re about me, mainly because I try not to talk about myself. I see it as conceited so I avoid it most of the time, but when the focus is on me, I’m left stuttering and sputtering some kind of nonsense and most people end up thinking I’m crazy. I just don’t feel the focus is, or should be, on me.

Regardless, Debo tagged me and because she tagged me, of course, I have to do it. I don’t know why I like meme’s so much, and there are bloggers that won’t even respond to them, which I think is in poor taste, unless you get 80 meme’s a day, then I can understand. I guess.

So you wanna know about me? Five things about me? This is more like 21 things about me, but I’ll do it anyways.

Here are the Five Things Meme questions:

1. What are 5 Things you were doing Ten years ago?
2. What are 5 Things on your to do list for today?
3. What are your 5 Favorite Snacks?
4. What would you do if you were a Millionaire?
5. Where are 5 places you have lived?

See my five things here. :)

I gotta say, it’s kind of odd seeing my handwriting on the internet. Y’all have a great day, see you here tomorrow!

Oh wait! I gotta tag some folks! Guess what, you’re it! Post your link in the comments so I can come check out your five things!

Let’s Take a Walk

Tag: Curious, Just Fun, Life, Progress, StressMouthyGirl @ 9:26 am

Today is the first day of the last month of 2008. This means a lot of things. First, that there are 31 days of this year left to finish anything you set out to do this year.

Second, that Christmas is coming and regardless whether or not you celebrate this holiday, so many people the world over do, that it’s bound to disrupt your life as well. Family time and holidays bring joy as well as stress.

Yesterday the hubby, the boy and me spent several hours at my sister’s house for a belated Thanksgiving dinner. I could see the stress in her face and see her expressions that told me she was overwhelmed. I think a lot of that has to do with personality, but also trying to be prepared for the whole family to be there stressed her out. I’m confident she was exhausted by the time everyone left.

Finally, this first day of the last month of 2008 also brings our attention to the fact that there’s a new year coming. Full of new resolutions, new objectives and new memories.

I certainly have a lot of plans for the coming year, primarily going back to school, hoping to accomplish something. I also will be staring down 30, on April 5th I will approach a new dawn in my life, a new decade. Unlike most women, I don’t think turning 30 will bother me at all. I’m finally at a place in my life where I’m happy, I believe I’ve found my one and only, my son is a good kid and growing up and I’m at peace with myself in a lot of ways that I wasn’t when I turned 20. So this next year holds a lot of promise for me I think.

This last month of the year I intend to get busy making plans, solidifying plans that have been made and charting my path to success in 2009. I don’t have a five year plan, but I’ve definitely got a plan for 2009. Take a walk with me down the memory lane of 2008, what you’ve experienced, what you’ve seen - who you’ve met and who you’ve parted ways with.

What’s in store for you in 2009? What happened in 2008 that was most notable that you’ll always remember?
