Tea baggers, Please Read This

As everyone knows, Glenn Beck set up an organization called the 9/12 project to March on Washington on September 12th. As per his banner on his site, “The 9-12 Project is designed to bring us all back to the place we were on September 12, 2001. The day after America was attacked we were not obsessed with Red States, Blue States or political parties. We were united together to protect the values and principles of the greatest nation ever created.” Good sentiment, but the 9/12 project is not about bringing us together at all. In fact, it was created to further the divide between Red states and Blue states. It was created by the very same people who want to do away with government and replace it with privatized industry and it is funded by those same private industries.

Let’s just take a step back here. I understand some of you don’t trust/like/respect the president of the United States, fine. Eventually, he will be out of office, whether it’s in 4 or 8 years. Trust me, I’ve lived through a president I couldn’t stand, and you will make it through, too. I promise. But really, what you guys are protesting for is just asinine. Private industry does not do everything “better”. Period.

The last 20-30 years in this country, the private industry has taken more and more roles away from the government. Our Congress men and women voted to allow the banks to “self govern” and we ended up with financial crisis of 2008. More of our roads are becoming toll ways, owned by private companies. The prison system is silently and quickly being taken over by for-profit companies. IRS collections are done with private companies. The military is contracting out “security” in our warzones to people who make 10-20 times more than our own soldiers. During Bush’s administration, he pushed for privatization of Social Security. Just imagine what our seniors would be going through right now if that had gone through! The fact is in all the examples I mentioned, the government had been providing the same exact services for years that cost less to the taxpayer.

And if you think that private companies taking over make you “freer”, I ask you this: Exactly what were you freed from, and do you realize that you are just being enslaved?

In a representative democracy, if we do not like what our government is doing, we vote them out. But what happens when the CEO who provides basic public services like water purification decides that it costs too much to make sure the water that we drink is safe? We can’t vote the CEO out, and the shareholders won’t vote them out because he is making the tough choices to ensure his company is making money.

The same is true for healthcare. We have let private companies decide who lives and dies. Their motives are based on profits. If your sister or brother comes down with cancer, they will try to find the loophole to get out of paying for the treatment. Your sister or brother dies, but hey, it’s nothing personal it’s just business. Meanwhile, the CEO of your insurance company takes home a billion dollars, (yes with a B) while your family buries your loved one. The CEO doesn’t care about you. And trust me, those same health insurance companies are helping Glenn Beck organize you to fight for them. Why would you fight FOR them?

What Glenn Beck has done is take you guys back to 9/12 in one respect. You feel the same FEAR we felt on 9/12. This time you don’t fear planes going in buildings or your fellow countrymen dying. You fear the very same government that is here to protect you. But yet, you don’t fear the slow takeover of our country by private corporations who care nothing about your freedom or safety, only about your dollar.

Think about it, please.

Getting it Off My Chest

Posted by Wendy on 08/24/2009 | 2 comments

I’m sure that everyone has experienced a week where everything seemed to go in every other direction than the way you planned. If you are anything like me, you get really mad when things go wrong that are totally out of your control. A couple of things went wrong for me in the past week. I will not bore you with the details. But I will tell you this: when something in my personal and professional life pisses me off, the rest of the world better be on its best behavior or they are going to hear about it. Apparently the rest of the world didn’t get the memo. World, get ready ‘cause here it comes.

To Democrats: Get your crap together. I swear you are all over the place. Can you guys and gals please start singing from the same hymn book? You guys are looking at the polls and you think people aren’t approving of what you are doing because they don’t want health care reform. They aren’t approving because you are being spineless wimps or are confusing the hell out of folks. Man up, and do this damn thing.

To Right-wing radio/TV/blogs: The president of the United States is entitled to a week off without your bitchin’ and moaning that he needs to be around to run the country. You guys constantly say that liberals look at him as the Messiah, but it is you who thinks the guy shouldn’t eat, sleep, or shit for the next 4 years. You know, I may have my biblical history wrong, but I think even Jesus ate and slept. You also think that he should just be able to snap his fingers and everything that is broken will be made whole. Really, let’s face the truth here. You just want to wear him down. Screw you. If your president could spend half his time playing cowboy in Crawford, my president can take a week off at the beach. And yes, I’ve heard you say it: he’s not YOUR president. Screw you. Again.

To Wal-mart: I noticed you changed the packaging on your Great Value brand, but that doesn’t give you the right to hike your prices. First of all, the packaging doesn’t bring any added value. In fact, it is less attractive and more generic than your old packaging. What is inside the packaging even seems to taste worse. I know that it is psychological, and I will overcome, because I know the reason you are doing it is to force me to spend more money on the higher priced name brand items. Ever since Sam Walton died, I’ve thought the company was taken over by soulless vampires. This confirms it.

To Corporations: I see that you are starting to report profits. Good for you. But I know it’s not because consumers are happily spending money in your establishments. It’s because you have cut your employees wages and benefits. Your workers are 20% more productive, but yet their personal incomes are falling. You get away with it because other people are losing their jobs, and people are content with just having a job. Meanwhile, your CEOs are still getting fat bonus checks and salaries. This will backfire, though. Sooner or later the economy will turn around, and the ones that toiled for you thanklessly will become the new employee for your competitor. So bask in your glory that you managed to turn a profit in a down economy, but know that your employees will remember when the getting is good. And as they walk out your door, they’ll just smile and say, “hey, it’s nothing personal, it’s the economy!”

Wow, I feel better now! Now what would you like to get off your chest?

Sick of This

Posted by Wendy on 08/10/2009 | 2 comments

I am sick and tired of the crazy idiots in this country trying to screw things up for the rest of us. I am really mad at the direction the town hall meetings on Health Care are going. There is no debate, it’s just yelling and screaming. In the end, level-headed citizens get none of their questions answered, and nothing gets accomplished. Honestly, it would be more productive if the members of Congress just post a list of “frequently asked questions.” Hey Congress, here is my suggested list, because I have yet to hear a question that falls out of these areas:

1) Is this bill going to make me kill my Grandma? A: Only if she is a wingnut republican. Democrats get to live forever and ever. We’ve rewritten the laws of nature and man just for the Democrats.

2) I don’t want the Government in my healthcare, but don’t take away my Medicare! A: Umm, okay.

3) Did you read the bill? A: Did you?

4) Are you going to kill Trig? A: No, but at age 65 his mother is going to be put down. See answer #1.

Okay, I know that was mean and it really was just tongue in cheek. But people, this happened in 1994. We got no healthcare reform, and the insurance companies are up to the same shenanigans. I have health coverage. It won’t make a difference to me, except I will have to pay higher and higher premiums each year. My employer will pay higher and higher premiums. But there are millions of Americans who don’t have insurance. Every time they visit an ER to get care, we all pay for it in our premiums.

Now I won’t say that I agree with every aspect of the bill, I don’t. But there has to be give and take here. The public option is there to keep the insurance companies honest. Besides, the way the law is written; all employers will be required to give health insurance to their employees through a private company. The public option is for those who can’t afford the private insurance. I know plenty of people who work for companies who are not covered under a health care plan. I know plenty of people who elect not to get coverage because they can’t afford a $700-800 a month premium.

Even though my company provides good insurance, I have also heard stories of people who came down with major illnesses getting procedures and drugs denied because it wasn’t in the plan. They not only have to battle cancer, they have to battle the insurance company too.

But really, screaming at the top of your lungs in a town hall meeting gets nothing done. It just makes you look like a crazy nutjob. If you oppose the bill, fine, oppose it. You can even express why you oppose it to your Congress person. But the healthcare insurance system now is a mess, and it needs reform. We can all agree on that.
