Use the Hell Out of Your G1

by MouthyGirl

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, my G1 is awesome, other phones have come out since this one, like the G2 and the MyTouch and others, but I’ve loved this phone since I first got it and don’t see any real need to upgrade, this phone is perfect.

I have this philosophy to use the hell out of everything I own, honestly what’s the point in spending money on something if you’re not going to use it/exploit it for every possible use? You can play NES games on the phone with the Nesoid app – you have to buy the app in order to save games and use the Game Genie codes in it but it is well worth it, the games run very smoothly.

In case you haven’t pulled the trigger and bought the app and found some .rom files, I’ll give you a few more details, for your keypad to play the game (and you can customize this too with the paid app) your arrow keys are 1,Q,W,A, your jump keys are O,P and your start button is Enter. If you’re playing Tetris, Game A style you can press the delete button to remove the preview of the next piece and press it again to get it back. Old School!

I have found a tethering app and use it all the time now, PDANet, you download the app for your phone at JuneFabrics.com and for the phone app go there with the browser on your phone and download it or you can search for it on the market. It works exceptionally well and 3G is fast enough for me to run several browser tabs on my laptop simultaneously. Very easy to use, and you’re already paying for the 3G data, might as well use it to the fullest right?

Daily Strip is another awesome app if you like to read a few comics for entertainment periodically, I love it. My favorite comics all in one place while I am waiting somewhere, killing time on a break or at lunch. The Boondocks, Calvin & Hobbes and Cyanide & Happiness are my absolute favorite comics, good for the smart ass soul. ;)

A few of my other favorite apps are: , Astro, Coloroid, Devilry Huntress, Digital Clock Widget, Horoscope Widget (shut up it’s funny), iTweet, NewsRob, ProZoom Camera 5X (bad ass supplement to your camera with great filters), Taskiller, Shazam, Visual Voicemail, Wallpaper Set & Save (a must have if you hate cropping your wallpapers) and wpToGo.

ToggleApps was a must have before the Donut update, they’ve updated the app including a task manager of it’s own and provided phone memory data, removing the need for a task manager which would be awesome except it force closes or fails once you get it up and running with custom options.

There are SEGA game emulators and GBA game emulators but I haven’t used them because I don’t want to learn new games on my phone, I’m looking to play my old favorites so all I wanted was Nesoid and NES roms. Like I said before about finding .rom files, Google is your friend. We found all we needed, which incidentally you can also use on your Wii with the Homebrew channel and on your PC if you can find a PC emulator. How do I know all this? My husband is a game enthusiast. ;)

Here are the previous posts I’ve written about the G1:

NES Games on the G1
34 G1 Wallpapers
G1 Backgrounds II

Most of these I got from G1Backgrounds.com I think one or two are pictures I took with the camera on my G1 and some I downloaded just from searching for certain backgrounds on Google.

Here are those backgrounds again, all in one place for you there are 51 attached here, so I’m sure you can find something you’ll like.

Don’t you love me?

NES Games on the G1

by MouthyGirl

The G1 is extremely versatile, I have been able to use it for a lot of things I would normally turn on my laptop to do. I just loaded my phone up a week ago with several old school NES games.

While I was playing Super Mario Brothers I thought about you. I had to share it, all the cool kids are doing it. You can play Super Mario Brothers 1, 2 and 3 and even Tetris (bonus!). I even have Dr. Mario to play, which is a lot like Tetris.

You can get the Nestoid app from the market but I can’t tell you where to get the .rom files (but Google is your friend) but if you like classic Nintendo games you should download the app and investigate getting some .rom files to play. My husband told me I can even use game genie codes if I want.

For me, being able to play the few games like Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt from childhood that I would play back then is a very cool feature. I’ll take a screenshot of it tonight and share it on Twitter, or maybe do a video for you real soon. ;)

Now if T-Mobile would only allow tethering…
*update: I have found an excellent tethering app, details can be found here
